Unleash the Power Within

Taking charge of your life

Build an extraordinary life when you learn how to take control

Posted by: Team Tony

“UPW gives you the ability to change your behavior and ultimately, change your destiny.” – Dan Gogliotti

Instead of being an active participant in your own life, do you find that opportunities pass you by? Do you often feel unfulfilled? Have you ever wondered what you could accomplish if you learned how to take charge of your life? The answer to living the way you want, rather than being reduced to a bystander, is to take charge. While this task can seem daunting at first, there’s a method employed by Tony Robbins that enables people to command their own paths and take control. Here’s how Unleash the Power Within (UPW) changed the lives of two individuals who weren’t sure where they were heading.

Embracing the desire to take charge of your life

As a chiropractor, Dan Gogliotti knew that most of his clients relied on insurance for his services, but with so many changes in the healthcare system, he was left with a lot of uncertainty on what would happen in his business. He needed to change how he looked at his business so he could determine the best way to provide value to his clients – and feel fulfilled in his own life

“We were created for greatness,” Dan said. “So what is keeping me from taking charge of my life?” He compared Tony’s teachings to what he believed about the human body: that the body – and the mind – know what to do to achieve that greatness. We just have to get out of the way so it can happen.

Second time around

Dan experienced such an incredible transformation in his marriage and family at his first Unleash the Power Within, he knew he needed to attend a second time to focus on his business. Dan understood that learning how to take charge of your life applies to personal as well as professional matters. What Tony and the Unleash the Power Within experience helped him realize was that he needed to focus on what he could control and give his clients enough reason to come back, regardless of any external uncertainty.

Dan’s experiences at UPW showed him why he makes the decisions that he does and feels the way that he feels. Understanding how we work and how our desires shape our decisions and our destiny, he remarked, was the most valuable takeaway from UPW. We can change our mindset, behaviors and how we feel, and change our story along the way.

He left equipped with action steps that he could immediately implement into his life and business to ensure it continued to thrive. He also committed to returning with his staff so they could grow as a team.

How to take charge of your life through self-discovery

“UPW is empowerment to really live the best life you can.” –  Erin Vasquez

How many times have you asked yourself, “Am I on the right path? Am I taking charge of my life, or is my life taking charge of me?”

Erin Vasquez was the vice president of marketing at a business consulting firm, but came to UPW in hopes of gaining clarity on what she should do with her life next. She wanted to take control. She found herself at UPW after studying several people she admired and discovering they had all been to the event before. As Tony says, when it comes to understanding how to take charge of your life, “If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and model what they do and you’ll achieve the same results.”

Breaking through limiting beliefs

UPW helped Erin see what limiting beliefs were keeping her from living the life she desired. “I’ve had some beliefs that I should remain small and unseen, and that I need to be polite to be loved.” Rather than look toward what she wanted to do and strive for more in life, she remained quiet and agreeable, following the path she felt she “should” take without rocking the boat. As a result, Erin had not given much thought to her life’s purpose or what she even really wanted out of life. She had a vague sense that she wanted to help people, but had never entertained any efforts beyond that. She felt adrift and not really in control of her life; this led to a depressive state

Tony helped her realize she was suppressing her true self. She had convinced herself that she needed a target to move forward in life – but she had no idea what that target was, because she hadn’t allowed herself to think about it. At UPW, Erin realized that life isn’t about having one set purpose. But by thinking it was, Erin had been smothered by limiting beliefs. Erin embraced a fundamental reality: Once you identify the beliefs that are holding you back, you’re on your way to understanding how to take charge of your life.

A new path

Throughout the UPW event, Erin realized she wanted “to help other people snap out” of the tailspin she knew all too well: When you don’t work diligently on how to take charge of your life, you feel powerless. While Erin had always been interested in coaching, she had never considered it as a career. After the first day, she spent the entire night researching when and where she could start training and how she could build a writing career alongside it.

One weekend completely transformed Erin’s life. Her willingness to be vulnerable and receive help set her on the path to a brighter life and inspired many of those attending UPW with her. If you’re asking, “How do I get started taking charge of my life?” imagine what UPW could do for you.

How to take charge of your life

When you figure out how to take charge of your life, you discover the message behind one of Tony Robbins’ famous quotes: “Success is doing what you want, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want.” Employ the following strategies to take charge of your life and career.

1.Be yourself

Do you ever feel like you’re living someone else’s life? We often think we know who we are because we’re living a certain way. The truth is that our lives don’t dictate who we are – who we are must dictate our lives. Tony says that “Where you’re going to be alive is where it’s really you.” Stop making decisions to make other people happy and start making yourself happy.

2. Master goal-setting

When we feel like spectators to our own lives, we become resigned. We seek out certainty over our other Six Human Needs. We “go with the flow” rather than taking decisive action – but our brains actually need to be challenged. Set goals that are difficult but achievable. Make sure they’re specific, and write them down. Leverage your brain’s natural need for growth to take charge of your life.

3. Develop focus

Instead of being distracted by all the areas where you want to take charge of your life, focus on one area at a time. When you develop focus, you’re able to see solutions where you might have missed them before. You’re also able to manage your anxiety, which is a product of overanalyzing all the “what ifs” that may never happen.

4. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude

How does gratitude play into learning how to take charge of your life? Imagine your future life is exactly as you want it to be: If you’re not thankful for it, you’ll miss out on the outcomes you worked so hard to achieve. Instead of dwelling on how life isn’t’ measuring up, use your discontentment to stimulate action. You’ll feel happier in your current circumstances without losing the momentum you need to pursue bigger and better outcomes.

5. Follow the 80/20 rule

The 80/20 rule is a valuable time management tool. When you’re working to take charge of your life, you want to make sure you’re concentrating 80% of your time, energy and attention on the tasks and relationships that matter most. To put the 80/20 rule into action, ask yourself: Am I taking charge of my life with X activity? Is it taking me closer to my purpose? If the answer is no, adjust your priorities.

6. Pace yourself

Learning how to take charge of your life is much like an endurance race. If you approach it with a sprinter’s mindset, you’ll burn out before crossing the finish line. Stop trying to get everything done as quickly as possible and take time to “smell the roses.” When you slow down, you incorporate mindfulness into your actions, which sets the stage for pursuing meaningful goals.

7. Make yourself vulnerable

Making changes in your life is going to create some discomfort, since you’re making yourself vulnerable. You must work through the discomfort to know yourself more fully. From there, learning how to take charge of your life becomes more intuitive, since you’re operating out of your most deeply-held values.

8. Raise your standards

Tony teaches that “Any time you sincerely want to make a change, the first thing you must do is to raise your standards.” Want a passionate relationship, less drama or a more fulfilling career? Don’t accept anything less. You may be alone for a while, or even lose friends. Draw on your inner strength and remember that you’re working toward taking charge of your life.

9. Hold yourself accountable

Everything in your life is a result of your decisions – not your past, not other people’s actions, not the state of the market. If you don’t reach a goal, be honest about why. Learn to recognize your patterns in relationships so you can free yourself of them. Only when you take full responsibility for all of your choices can you take charge of your life.
