In today’s hyper-competitive world, it’s easy to believe that the biggest obstacles to business success are external—cash flow, market conditions, technology, or competition. But after decades of working with entrepreneurs and business leaders across the globe, I’ve discovered a universal truth: the ultimate chokehold on any business is not the economy, not the competition, not even cash flow. It’s the psychology and skills of the owner or leader.

Shane’s Story: From Limiting Beliefs to Empowered Action

Shane’s business had grown by 50% in just three years—a remarkable achievement. But with that growth came a new challenge: major cash flow issues. Like so many business owners, Shane started to believe a common myth: “As you grow, cash flow becomes a problem.” It’s a belief that can feel true, especially when you’re in the thick of it. But is it really the cash flow that’s the problem, or is it something deeper?

When Shane stood up at Business Mastery, he shared his struggle. I could see the weight of that belief on his shoulders. Together, we worked through the three steps to changing limiting beliefs:First, we uncovered the hidden assumption: that growth inevitably leads to cash flow problems. This is the kind of belief that can quietly sabotage your progress, because if you accept it as truth, you stop looking for solutions.Next, I challenged Shane to examine this belief in detail. Is it really true that growth must create cash flow issues? Or is it possible that with the right skills and strategies, growth can actually improve cash flow? We explored whether Shane had the skills he needed, and if not, how he could acquire them. The truth is, whatever you believe, you make it true. If you believe you’re stuck, you’ll stay stuck. But if you believe there’s a way forward, you’ll find it.Finally, I asked Shane: If that thought didn’t exist—if he didn’t believe growth had to create cash flow problems—how would he feel? What would he do differently? Instantly, his energy shifted. He went from feeling fearful and disempowered to free and decisive. He identified three actions he could take right away to improve his situation.
