6 tips for tough times

A woman sits on a rock, back to camera, overlooking a green valley with a river at sunset.

Life is never a straight line. We take three steps forward and two steps back. We come to a fork and choose the wrong path. Sometimes it feels like we’re not moving at all—especially when we’re going through tough times. But here’s the truth: how you navigate those moments defines the quality of your life.

"We must trust that everyone in life is here to learn different lessons at different times, that good and bad experiences are only the perceptions of man." —Tony Robbins

As I often say, “It’s not what happens to you, but how you respond that shapes your destiny.” Life isn’t a math problem with a definitive formula. It’s not as easy as “solve for X.” Life isn’t a connect-the-dots drawing with only one right answer. Life is more like an epic novel—a winding and complicated adventure in which you are the hero. There are only two ways for the story to end: suffer or grow. With the right skills and mindset, you can learn how to get through tough times and create an extraordinary ending.

1. Express Your Feelings: Don’t Let Pressure Build

Picture a boiling tea kettle. It builds up pressure until finally the steam is released—or the kettle explodes. Emotions are like the steam in a tea kettle: they’re going to come out one way or another. Avoiding your feelings allows them to build up inside you. They mutate into anxiety, depression, or unhealthy habits like drinking or overeating.

Tony’s insight: When I was a kid, I learned early on that bottling up emotions only made things worse. I had to find ways to express my pain and frustration—whether through running, talking, or writing. That release was the first step toward transformation.

Try this at home: Start a daily journal where you write freely about your feelings—no judgment, no editing. Or pick a creative outlet like drawing or music. The goal is to let your emotions flow instead of holding them hostage. When you release your feelings, you clear your mind and open yourself to the lessons they bring.

2. Change Your Physiology: Move to Change Your Mind

When we’re happy, we smile. When we’re nervous, we tremble. Our emotions affect our physiology—but the reverse is also true: your body changes your mind.

The act of smiling can make you happier because it triggers feel-good hormones. Power posing—standing tall with your hands on your hips or arms raised in a “V”—can boost confidence and shift your mindset.

Tony’s story: When I was homeless and broke, I used to run 15.5 miles repeating the phrase, “Every day in every way, I’m getting stronger and stronger.” That physical movement rewired my state and gave me the power to keep going.

“The higher your energy level, the more efficient your body. The more efficient your body, the better you feel and the more you will use your talent to produce outstanding results.” —Tony Robbins

Try this at home: When you feel stuck or overwhelmed, stand up, take a deep breath, and strike a power pose for two minutes. Notice how your energy shifts. Use this as a quick reset anytime you need to reclaim your power.

3. Focus on What You Can Control: Empower Yourself

Everyone faces things beyond their control. But nobody ever got anywhere by focusing on those things. You’re only setting yourself up for frustration and anxiety.

Exercise: Take a piece of paper and draw two columns. On the left, list everything you can’t control. On the right, list what you do control—your thoughts, actions, attitude. Cross off the left column and commit to focusing your energy on the right.

"You've got to realize that you must take conscious control of running your own mind; otherwise, you're going to be at the mercy of whatever happens around you." —Tony Robbins

Tony’s truth: “The quality of your life is the quality of your focus.” When you choose to focus on what you can change, tough times become opportunities for growth.

4. Change Your Perspective: Find the Gift in Every Experience

You get to decide what meaning you give to your experiences. You can see tough times as an end—or as a beginning. A curse—or a blessing.

“Every experience of your life has gifts for you,” I say. Believing this makes going through hard times easier.

"Problems are gifts that force us to dig in and figure out who we are, what we're made of and what we can GIVE to life." —Tony Robbins

Practice gratitude: Each day, write down three things you’re grateful for—even small things. This rewires your brain to see the positive and take a step back to the bigger picture.

5. Prioritize Self-Care: Recharge to Rise

Tough times drain your energy. You might be dealing with job loss, family stress, or even the collective anxiety of the world. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

Try these:

  • Practice priming or meditation to clear your head.
  • Move your body—walk, dance, stretch—to release stress.
  • Laugh! Watch a funny video or listen to uplifting music to shift your mood.

Tony’s reminder: “If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live?” Your energy is your greatest asset—protect it.

6. Find Support: You Don’t Have to Go It Alone

Your support system shapes your mindset and resilience. Friends who listen and encourage you provide more than comfort—they help you see your path forward.

Tip: Surround yourself with people who lift you up and help you envision a better future. Avoid those who dwell in negativity.

Consider coaching: An outside perspective can reveal blind spots and keep you accountable. I’ve seen countless people break through their toughest times with the right guidance.

Your Story Is Still Being Written

Life’s challenges are inevitable, but suffering is optional. You have the power to break old patterns and create a story of growth, resilience, and triumph.

As I’ve learned through my own journey—from poverty and pain to coaching millions—“It’s not about avoiding the storm, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.” Use these tools to express your feelings, shift your state, focus your mind, change your perspective, care for yourself, and build your support system.

Your breakthrough is waiting. The hero of your story is you.
