The Secret to Mastering Your Destiny: How Pain, Pleasure, and Hunger Drive Every Decision
“The secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you. If you do that, you’re in control of your life. If you don’t, life controls you.” — Tony Robbins
Imagine standing at a crossroads in your life. Each path leads to a different future. The choices you make in that moment don’t just determine your next step — they ripple through your entire destiny. I’ve witnessed countless people transform their lives, not because they had more options, but because they understood what truly drives their decisions.
Decisions — we make them every day. And with every decision we make (good or bad), our lives are defined just a little more, because decisions ultimately shape our destiny.
Knowing this, why do some of us continue to make questionable decisions? It might seem like the proverbial angel and devil on each shoulder, swaying you in one direction or the other. But the truth is, it’s a question of self-control — or more accurately, what drives decision making at its core.
As Tony Robbins teaches, every decision we make is dependent on our values. We make decisions that lean toward pleasure and away from pain. The need to avoid pain and seek pleasure drives everything we do — and as Tony says, “People will do more to avoid pain than they will do to gain pleasure.” What lengths will we go to? It all depends on our standards and our focus.

Better decision making begins with self-awareness — the ability to identify and express our emotions and thoughts. Learning what drives our decisions is the first step toward total control of our emotions — and our lives. Here are three surprising factors that drive every decision you make:
Let me take you back to a moment that changed everything — the birth of the firewalk at Unleash the Power Within. This isn’t just a story about walking barefoot across burning embers. It’s a story about breaking through fear, rewriting what’s possible, and igniting a fire inside that can never be extinguished…[…]
Let me share with you some of my favorite transformation stories from the firewalk over the years — moments that still light me up because they reveal the raw, unstoppable power of human courage and breakthrough. These aren’t just tales of walking on embers; they’re stories of people stepping into their greatness, shedding old fears, and rewriting their lives forever. […]

The key to unstoppable drive is vision and certainty. This combination of purpose and confidence separates average entrepreneurs from extraordinary ones.
1. Your Focus
What you focus on, you feel — and it’s what drives decision making like nothing else can. Will you make decisions out of fear, or out of positivity, hope, and love? Will you focus on the past and let it define you, or will you let it go?
Tony explains that every moment of our lives, we’re answering three crucial questions:
What are you going to focus on? Will you focus on what you can control or what you can’t? To engage in better decision making, shift your focus to what you can control. Will you dwell on the past, live in the present, or plan for the future? To enjoy the moment and build an extraordinary future, balance present awareness with future vision — but let go of the past.
What meaning will you give to this experience? Is this the end or the beginning? Is this a punishment or a gift? Meaning is everything. It defines how you respond and what you decide to do next.
What am I going to do with this experience? If you see a setback as punishment, you’ll react differently than if you see it as a gift or lesson. You are the architect of your life — and the way you choose to experience that life drives your decisions.
Practical Tip: Start your day by consciously choosing your focus. Practice gratitude, visualize your goals, and catch yourself when your mind drifts to worries or regrets. Reframe challenges as opportunities to grow.
Higher standards lead to better decisions. Raise your standards, or shift your beliefs and values, and you will naturally make the right choices.
Think about two people trying to build a healthy habit. One says, “I’ll try to eat better,” while the other says, “I am someone who nourishes my body with intention.” The difference isn’t motivation — it’s the standard they hold themselves to. The second person’s higher standard drives consistent decisions that align with their identity.
When faced with a decision — whether it’s writing a report or resisting a cookie — the difference between two people’s choices often comes down to their standards.
3. Your Hunger
Ultimately, decision making is linked to your level of hunger — your drive and determination to succeed.
Achievers, those determined to win, have a hunger for success that pushes them to make better decisions because their standards are so high. It’s not just self-control; it’s a burning hunger that fuels relentless action.
Achievers use failure as fuel to push forward instead of excuses to fall back. Someone else might blame failures on lack of self-control, but without hunger and high values, they don’t have the fire to persevere.
Where Do Your Values Come From?
Here’s the good news: your values and standards aren’t fixed. They’re learned. You’ve unconsciously modeled the values of the people you admire and rejected those you don’t.
You have the power to consciously evaluate and raise your standards. Keep what serves you. Let go of what doesn’t.
Step 1: Get Clear on Your Current Standards Take 10 minutes and write down some recent decisions you made — big or small. Notice the standards behind those choices. Were they driven by convenience, fear, or commitment? Be honest. Awareness is the first step.
Step 2: Identify Which Standards Are Serving You and Which Are Not Look at your list and ask yourself: Which of these standards are helping me move toward the life I want? Which are holding me back? Circle the ones that empower you, underline the ones that don’t.
Step 3: Define Your New, Higher Standards For each area where you want to improve, write a clear, positive standard. For example:
“I am someone who prioritizes my health every day.”
“I am committed to showing up fully in my relationships.”
“I choose actions that move me closer to my goals, even when it’s uncomfortable.”
Make these standards specific, empowering, and aligned with who you want to become.
Step 4: Anchor Your Standards with Identity Statements Turn your standards into identity statements you say aloud daily. For example:
“I am a person who makes decisions with courage and clarity.”
“I am someone who honors my commitments.” Say these with conviction — engage your body, your voice, your emotion. This conditions your nervous system to embody these new standards.
Step 5: Set One Small Action Aligned with Your New Standards Pick one simple, concrete action you can take today that reflects your raised standards. It might be:
Drinking an extra glass of water.
Saying no to a distraction.
Writing down your top 3 priorities for tomorrow. Make it small enough to succeed but meaningful enough to build momentum.
Step 6: Create a Visual Reminder Write your new standards or identity statements on a sticky note or journal page. Place it somewhere you’ll see it daily — your bathroom mirror, desk, or phone wallpaper. This keeps your standards top of mind.
Step 7: Review and Adjust Daily At the end of each day, spend 3 minutes reviewing:
Did I live up to my standards today?
What decisions reflected my new identity?
What can I improve tomorrow? This reflection builds accountability and continuous growth.
Bonus: Use Your Hunger as Fuel
Connect your new standards to a compelling “why” — your hunger. Why do you want to raise your standards? What will it give you? Write this down and revisit it whenever motivation dips.
Remember: Raising your standards isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistent progress and choosing who you want to be right now. Start with these steps today, and watch how your decisions — and your life — begin to shift.
Unlock deeper connection and transform your relationships
The power to change your destiny is in your hands. Start by owning your decisions today. Raise your standards, sharpen your focus, and ignite your hunger.
As Tony says, “It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.” Master your decisions, and you master your life.Your future self will thank you.
