Perfectionism is driven by fear, not high standards

progress over perfection

There is a tendency among high performers to wear perfectionism like a badge of honor. You may think that your obsession with getting everything right shows just how high your standards are. You might even believe perfectionism is the fuel that drives you to be better.

But here's the truth: perfectionism is not high standards.

It is fear.

Fear of not measuring up.
Fear of disappointing others. Fear of embarrassing yourself.
Fear of failure.

And fear never leads to real growth. It doesn't make you better. It won't help you reach your goals. Fear keeps you stuck, overthinking, and waiting for a level of certainty that never comes.

Perfection is the lowest standard

Perfectionism is the lowest standard because it is impossible to attain.

When you make perfection the goal, you guarantee that you will never feel successful because there’s always room for growth. You create a standard you cannot reach, which leads to frustration, inadequacy, and self-doubt. Even worse, when the standard is impossible, you may never take action at all because a part of you already knows you can't win.

That's when perfectionism becomes an excuse for inaction.

In our results coaching, we've observed that too many leaders stall their decisions because they feel like they need to have everything figured out before they move forward. But if you wait for the perfect plan, you prevent yourself from moving, learning, adapting, and gaining momentum.

Real success and fulfillment come when you shift your standard from perfection to progress.

Progress over perfection

Our brains are wired to seek growth. When you learn a new skill or move closer to a meaningful goal, your brain releases dopamine, the chemical associated with pleasure and motivation. Not only does progress feel good, but it also encourages you to keep going. It builds momentum and accelerates your growth.

People often chase happiness as if it is a destination. They think they will finally arrive when they get the right job, the next big promotion, the body they want, or the relationship of their dreams.

The Investment That Compounds

He was 22 the first time he walked into Unleash the Power Within. By then, Andrew Sossin had already heard Tony say your peer group can bring you down, you can bring them up, or you can find a new one. Instead of finding a new one, he brought his existing peer group somewhere the standard was higher than anything they'd experienced and let that raise all of them at once. […]

Psychological fitness for big business gains

When it comes to driving business success, nothing impacts business success more than the psychology of its leaders.

But the secret is that happiness is not a destination. It is a process.

Happiness is found in the progress you make along the way.

Progress equals happiness.

The fear holding you back

Perfectionism is essentially the fear of making a mistake.

You may be afraid of what others will think if you fail. You may be afraid that making a mistake means you are not capable. You may fear looking foolish if you try something and are not immediately great at it.

But mistakes are not something to fear. They are essential to growth.

The most successful people take quick action, fail fast, learn fast, and keep moving. Each mistake gives you information. Each setback gives you feedback. Each challenge gives you the opportunity to adapt and grow stronger.

The key to overcoming this fear of failure is action.

Tony Robbins emphasizes that "no matter how many mistakes you make or how slow your progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying."

Progress doesn't have to be fast to be meaningful. Don't get discouraged or assume you have failed if your efforts don't pay off right away.

The majority of people overestimate what they can do in a year and underestimate what they can do in a decade or two. Persistence and progress beat perfection every time.

A system that drives progress

The secret to making meaningful progress is to take action and stay consistent.

The Rapid Planning Method, or RPM, is a system of thinking that aligns you with what you really want and helps you make consistent progress.

It is more than task management or time management. It is a system for designing a life that aligns with your values and produces meaningful results. It can help you make progress, find joy, and create success in every area of your life, including your business, health, relationships, and personal development.

Instead of coming from a place of fear, RPM empowers you to build a life on your terms by asking three powerful questions: What do I really want? Why do I want it? And what’s my plan to get there?

Here's how it works:

Result: What do you really want? Start by asking exactly what you want to accomplish. This should be a concrete, measurable result. Not just, I want to grow my business, but, I want to increase sales by 25% by the end of the quarter.

Purpose: Once you've settled on a desired result, you need to know why you want it. Purpose is what keeps you going when things get difficult. Purpose gives your goal emotional fuel. Ask yourself, Why is this important to me? A defining purpose might be, I want to leave a legacy for my kids, or, I want the financial freedom to give more generously. And it’s okay to have more than one purpose. The key is that it’s something compelling to you.

Massive Action Plan: This is where the plan becomes real. Write down all the possible actions you could take to make progress toward your goal. Then choose the 20% of actions that will produce 80% of your results. Don't leave a planning session without taking one small step. Make a sales call, schedule a meeting, send an email, or register for a self-development seminar. Taking action builds accountability and momentum.

The goal in life is not simply to manage time. The goal is to build a life that is deeply fulfilling, where you are growing, contributing, and moving toward what matters most.

RPM is a way of thinking and living where you are continually focused on what you want, why it matters, and how to make progress toward it.

RPM forces you to take action. And action drives away fear.

That is how you eliminate perfectionism.

Choose progress, choose happiness

Letting go of perfectionism and embracing progress is a choice.

It is a choice that opens you up to learning, growth, and joy. It is a choice to see mistakes as stepping stones instead of proof that you are not enough. It is a choice to flip fear on its head and become more afraid of what you might lose if you don't act than you are of failure itself.

Don't wait for some future success to give yourself permission to feel happy.

Embrace progress now.

When you do, you won't just move toward your goals faster. You will find more strength, joy, and fulfillment along the way.

"If you want to know the secret to happiness, I can give it to you in one word: progress. Progress equals happiness. "— Tony Robbins
