Who are you — really — in your business?

Discovering Your True Leadership Gift: The Power of Self-Awareness at Business Mastery

One of the most transformative moments at Business Mastery is when you uncover your unique leadership style. In business, your work isn’t just a job—it’s an extension of who you are. But too often, we operate under assumptions about our strengths, never realizing there’s a deeper truth waiting to be discovered.

At Business Mastery, I guide leaders through a powerful exercise to identify their core leadership gift. Are you a Manager, the one who brings order and efficiency? An Artist, driven to create and innovate? Or an Entrepreneur, always seeking new opportunities and willing to take bold risks?

Mehdy Ghannad’s Breakthrough: From Artist-Entrepreneur to Manager

Take the story of Mehdy Ghannad, a travel program producer from Miami, Florida. Mehdy came to Business Mastery believing he was an entrepreneur with an artist’s twist—someone who thrived on creativity and risk. But through the process, he experienced what he called “complete enlightenment.” He discovered that his true leadership gift was as a Manager. He wasn’t the artist—he was the one who managed the artists, bringing out their best and making the whole team more effective.

This realization was the missing puzzle piece for Mehdy. By understanding his real strengths, he gained a new perspective on his business and career. He could now lead his team with greater clarity, confidence, and connection.

How You Can Discover Your Leadership Style at Home

You don’t have to attend Business Mastery to start this journey (though, as Mehdy says, “Come to Business Mastery—point blank!”). Here’s a simple, step-by-step process you can use to discover your leadership style—just like we do at Business Mastery.

Remember, this is about self-awareness, not putting yourself in a box. Let’s get started:

Step 1: Reflect on Your Peak Moments: Think back to a time when you felt most energized and effective at work. What were you doing? Were you creating something new, optimizing a process, or seizing an opportunity? Write down a few examples.

Step 2: Identify What You Naturally Gravitate Toward: Ask yourself:

  • Do I love building and designing (Artist)?
  • Do I thrive on organizing, planning, and making things run smoothly (Manager)?
  • Or do I get excited by taking risks and finding new ventures (Entrepreneur)?

Step 3: Gather Honest Feedback: Ask a few trusted colleagues, friends, or team members: “When do you see me at my best? What strengths do I bring to the team?” Sometimes others see our gifts more clearly than we do.

Step 4: Notice Your Energy: Pay attention to which activities give you energy and which ones drain you. Your true leadership style will feel natural and energizing, not forced or exhausting.

Step 5: Embrace Your Core Style: Based on your reflections and feedback, which leadership style feels most authentic to you right now—Artist, Manager, or Entrepreneur? Remember, you may have elements of all three, but one will usually stand out.

Step 6: Leverage Your Strengths: Once you’ve identified your style, look for ways to use it more intentionally in your work and with your team. If you’re a Manager, focus on building systems and supporting others. If you’re an Artist, bring your creativity to the forefront. If you’re an Entrepreneur, keep seeking new opportunities and inspiring others to take bold action.

Step 7: Revisit and Refine: Leadership is a journey, not a destination. As you grow, your style may evolve. Revisit this process regularly to stay aligned with your strengths and passions.
