Think about the world we live in today. Think about how much negative news floods the television. Think about the trivial and often times, petty banter that we can get mixed up on in social media. What do you think that does to your mind, or even your soul over time?
One of the most important lessons Tony’s mentor, Jim Rohn, ever taught was to “stand guard at the door of your mind.”
If you don’t watch what you let into your mind – negative thoughts from yourself or from others – then you are allowing weeds to grow and to spread. Life just starts to happens to you. No matter how smart you are, how savvy you are, how inspired you are – if you don’t stand guard at the door of your mind, then you are giving the tacit approval of the disempowering, disenchanting and disillusioning.
So what’s the best way to feed your mind? To proactively feed it. And that is a lot easier than you may think. Tell yourself that this year, there isn’t going to be a single day where you don’t do something that positively feeds your mind. Even if it’s as minuscule as reading for 10 minutes a day. Even if it’s meditating for 10 minutes every morning. Think that’s too much? Then what about listening to a podcast on your commute. How much extra time does that take out of your day? Absolutely none!
The more that you make this a habit, the more engrained it will become in the way you go throughout the day. Negative news on the television will begin to signal you to change the channel. Pedantic arguments on social media will inspire you to watch an inspiring YouTube clip. The stress of a morning commute may even turn into your favorite part of the day as you listen to an empowering and enlightening podcast.
Eventually, these small changes will add up in one very big way. You will become more in control of your thoughts. You will become more in command of your environment. And you will be more conscious of the ways that you can elevate your life and find new opportunities for improvement.

The Lesson That Changed Tony Robbins Life
Standing Guard at the Door of Your Mind
I want to share something deeply personal. When I was young, I was broke, overweight, and overwhelmed by the noise of the world. I was letting every negative headline, every toxic conversation, every doubt from inside and outside, flood my mind. One day, my mentor Jim Rohn pulled me aside and said, “Tony, you’ve got to stand guard at the door of your mind.” That wasn’t just advice—it was a call to arms. I realized I was inviting poison in and expecting greatness to come out. So I made a decision: I would only feed my mind with what empowers me, what inspires me, what fuels my hunger to grow.
That decision was the turning point. I started devouring books, listening to powerful audio, surrounding myself with people who lifted me higher. As I say, “You become what you feed your mind.” The quality of what I consumed became the quality of what I created. That’s cause and effect, plain and simple.
Why Feeding Your Mind Is the Ultimate Power Move
Your mind is like a garden. If you let in weeds—fear, doubt, negativity—you’ll choke out your potential. But if you plant seeds of growth, gratitude, and possibility, your mind will bloom into a powerhouse of creativity and resilience.
I’ve seen it thousands of times on stage and in coaching rooms: people who guard their minds fiercely are unstoppable. They know that “where focus goes, energy flows.” Feeding your mind with empowering content isn’t optional—it’s essential.
Here’s what feeding your mind right does for you:
Elevates your emotional state: Positive inputs create positive feelings.
Sharpens your focus: You become crystal clear about what matters.
Boosts resilience: You handle challenges with strength and grace.
Ignites creativity: New ideas flow when your mind is nourished.
Builds confidence: You start believing in your ability to create change.

Tony’s 3-Step Intervention to Feed Your Mind Daily
I want you to try this right now. Stand up if you can. Shoulders back, chest open, take a deep breath in—and let it out with power. This simple physiology shift rewires your nervous system. Now, commit to these three daily habits:
Read or listen to something empowering for 10 minutes: It could be a book, podcast, or speech. I prime myself every morning with gratitude and visualization—this sets my whole day on fire.
Limit your exposure to negative media: When the news tries to drag you down, change the channel. When social media pulls you into petty fights, step away.
Surround yourself with positive influences: Find mentors, friends, or communities that lift you higher and challenge you to grow.
I don’t say this lightly. When I’m preparing for a big event, I guard my mind like a fortress. I don’t let in anything that doesn’t serve my highest vision. And that’s why I’m able to bring that energy to millions.
How to Build a Mental Environment That Elevates You
Your environment shapes your destiny. That includes your mental environment. Here’s how to curate it like a champion:
Be ruthless about your media diet: Choose sources that educate and elevate.
Unfollow or mute toxic social media accounts: Protect your peace fiercely.
Create a morning ritual: Start your day with intention, gratitude, and power.
Practice incantations: Say empowering affirmations with emotion and movement—don’t just say “I am confident,” BE confident.
Engage in conversations that uplift: Seek out mentors and peers who inspire and challenge you.
Raise your standards to create long-lasting changes in yourself
The Long-Term Payoff: Master Your Mind, Master Your Life
When you commit to feeding your mind proactively, you’re not just changing what you think—you’re changing who you become. Over time:
You’ll respond to stress and setbacks with calm and clarity.
Your decisions will align with your highest goals and values.
Opportunities will become clearer and more abundant.
Your relationships will deepen as your energy uplifts others.
You’ll live with greater purpose, passion, and peace.
As I always say, “The quality of your life is the quality of your emotions, and the quality of your emotions is the quality of your thoughts.” Feed your mind with power, possibility, and purpose every single day. Your future self will thank you.
