1. Let yourself feel

Happiness is a state of mind that acts as your center – you always come back to it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t feel anything else. In fact, allowing yourself to acknowledge, feel and work through other emotions is a big part of emotional fitness. Identify what you’re feeling and ask yourself why you feel that way.

2. Practice gratitude

Humans have emotions for a reason. They’re here to teach us lessons and help us grow. Be thankful for them – and practice gratitude in all other aspects of your life as well. When you adopt an abundance mindset, you’ll focus on what you have instead of what you don’t have. And that’s one of the best lessons in how to feel better.

3. Change your mindset

It’s important to let yourself feel, but don’t dwell on your feelings. Try to find the lesson in them instead. Then, you can change your mindset by replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Instead of being sad, remember good times. 6. Call a friend:

We all crave connection, and sometimes texting just doesn’t cut it. Hearing your best friend’s voice could be just what you need.

7. Turn off social media:

Social connections are essential – but social media can lead to major feelings of inadequacy and jealousy. Take a break.

8. Spend an afternoon with your family:

They are what life is really about. Remind yourself why you work so hard by simply being present with them.

When I’m caught in sadness or anger, I don’t let those emotions run the show. The first thing I do is change my physiology — I stand up, open my chest, pull my shoulders back, and take a deep, powerful breath. Emotion is created by motion, so shifting my body shifts my mind instantly.

Next, I speak to myself with incantations — not just words, but words charged with emotion and conviction. I say things like, “I am strong. I am in control. I am unstoppable.” Saying these out loud rewires my nervous system and breaks the cycle of negative self-talk.

Finally, I connect to my inner Sage — that calm, wise part of me that sees beyond the moment’s pain. The Sage reminds me that this feeling is temporary and that I have the power to choose my response. That connection grounds me and brings clarity, so I can move forward with purpose instead of reaction.

How Sage Feels Better Fast

Sage, my wife, has her own powerful way of shifting her state. When she feels overwhelmed or upset, she starts by grounding herself in the present moment. She’ll close her eyes, take deep, slow breaths, and focus on her senses — what she can hear, feel, and see around her. This presence immediately quiets the noise in her mind.

Then, Sage moves her body — sometimes it’s gentle stretching, sometimes a walk outside. Movement helps her release tension and reset her energy.She also uses empowering self-talk, but in her own unique way. She’ll remind herself, “I am calm. I am centered. I am enough.” These simple affirmations, spoken with feeling, help her reclaim control.
