How to improve quality of life

What is the greatest gift in life? Is it physical health, or financial success, or the joy of family and friends? Is it grace and spirituality? Is it personal and professional growth? It’s all of these things – and more. It’s the ability to live joyfully, be productive and jump out of bed each morning with energy and vitality. It’s a life filled with happiness and fulfillment. It all starts with you learning how to improve quality of life.

What is quality of life?

Quality of life is the extent to which you are happy, healthy and able to participate in this adventure we call living. Someone with a high quality of life is fulfilled, energetic and physically, mentally and emotionally healthy. At the highest levels, a person is spiritually healthy as well. At the other end of the spectrum, someone with a low quality of life is stressed, fearful and anxious, with no energy or purpose.

While we all have basic physical needs that must be filled in order for us to have the minimum quality of life, beyond that it isn’t always straightforward. We can have a high quality of life without physical health, as long as we have a positive mindset. And we can have a low quality of life even if we are the most financially successful, physically fit person on the planet, if our success doesn’t bring us fulfillment. As Tony says, “Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” We must master both the science of achievement and the art of fulfillment in order to improve quality of life.

Why is quality of life important?

Quality of life is more than having enough to eat, a place to sleep and a job that lets you pay the bills – although if you do have those things, you are incredibly fortunate. Learning how to improve quality of life can elevate your well-being in ways you didn’t even think possible: transforming your mindset, reducing stress and elevating you to your peak state.

Will a high quality of life increase your lifespan? It’s possible. But more importantly, it will increase your healthspan – the amount of time you spend enjoying that lifespan. Quality of life means making the most of the years you have on this earth. It means creating a life worth living, instead of just existing. It means that beyond asking, “What is quality of life?,” you take full responsibility for yours.

7 ways to improve your quality of life

Your first step is to make the decision that you’re going to raise your standards. You won’t settle for anything less than the life you deserve, and nothing can stand in your way. Then you’re ready to work on a few of Tony Robbins’ top strategies to improve quality of life.

1. Change your mindset

It’s true that sometimes we can’t control the things that happen to us. Illness, accidents and the loss of loved ones are devastating. But what we can control – and ultimately what controls our quality of life – is how we react to what happens to us. When we start believing that life happens for us, not to us, we begin to see opportunities where before we only saw obstacles.

2. Shift your focus

Another way you can transform the way you think is to shift your focus. Instead of focusing on how stressed, frustrated or depressed you are, focus on where you want to be instead. Instead of complaining or wallowing in self-pity, ask yourself how to improve quality of life. Where focus goes, energy flows, and when you focus on things that will make your life better, the law of attraction brings them to you.

3. Surround yourself with good people

To improve quality of life, improve your relationships. Spending time with toxic people leads to a toxic life. When you surround yourself with good people who lift you up, help you grow and exemplify what you want in life, it also lifts up your soul. Sam Berns, an activist and incredible inspiration who was born with progeria, a rare and deadly disease, put it this way: “I surround myself with people that I want to be with. And I keep moving forward.”

4. Master your emotions

Tony says that “The quality of your life is the quality of your emotions.” How are they connected? What you focus on, you feel. What you feel affects your decisions, which inform your actions. And it is ultimately those actions that most deeply affect your quality of life. The next time something makes you feel angry, disappointed or helpless, remember that the meaning you assign to things is your own choice. You can choose to feel differently.

5. Fix your finances

One area of life in which many people feel negative emotions is their finances. And one decision you can make to improve quality of life is to master the game of money. You don’t have to be rich to take charge of your finances. Anyone can learn about budgeting, financial planning and saving for retirement. The ability to live life on our own terms is something we all want, and financial freedom is the way to get there.

6. Live a healthier lifestyle

While the mind is important, what is quality of life if you don’t have the energy to enjoy it? When you don’t have the strength and vitality to give your all, growth is elusive – and if you’re not growing, you’re dying. Feeding your body the right fuel is essential, as is finding exercise you enjoy. And therapies like relaxation training, yoga, qi gong, biofeedback and cognitive behavioral therapy take a holistic approach to health that benefits both the body and the mind.

7. Explore regenerative medicine

Regenerative medicine encompasses a variety of treatments that help the body repair itself. Instead of just treating symptoms, it aims to cure the underlying problem, which is often inflammation. Tony has long been a proponent of top biohacks like cryotherapy, light treatments and compression. In his new book, Life Force, he goes in-depth about even more cutting-edge treatments that can improve quality of life through increased energy and focus, weight loss, pain reduction, healing and more.
